Rocky Peak Productions was founded in 2003 by three local bicycle enthusiasts who originally met to determine, if, how and when a 24 hour race could be realized locally in Steamboat Springs.  The 24 hour race soon was joined by a revived road race from the late 1970’s in the form of a century + road ride. The three are now two, and Brad Cusenbary and Katie Lindquist continue to grow and develop the original mission of producing events by cyclists, for cyclists.  Both Brad and Katie have extensive racing histories, and also the managerial and organizational skills required to produce cycling events participants remember.

Rocky Peak Productions now produces one great summer event, the Kent Eriksen Tour de Steamboat (TDS). The annual non-competitive century ride held annually in July, has turned itself into being an event to raise funds for the Sunshine Kids Foundation (benefitting children with cancer). After being introduced to the national organization through their “Winter Games” hosted in Steamboat Springs, RPP realized that we could use the TDS to not only bring awareness to the Foundation, but raise money for the kids.

The Tour and partnership with the Sunshine Kids took a turn in 2009 with the Tours co-founder, Brad Cusenbary, being diagnosed with brain cancer. This has only spurred the TDS crew with more energy to make the event bigger and better. The introduction of the Board of Directors for 2010, only elevates the level of excitement. From the entire Board, we hope to see you at this years Kent Eriksen’s Tour de Steamboat!

It has been over one year since my co-director Brad was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. In the past year Brad has been physically and emotionally challenged daily. We have seen all sorts of responses go through his body. His treatments include radiation, chemotherapy, steroids, Avastin and everything else to counter the side effects of it all. Through it all Brad has shown us all what it means to be tough. This Texan has not wavered in his enthusiasm for life. His focus and energy in this challenged state is as strong as ever. Most importantly he has taught us all what it means to fight by helping us through his disease. He is always game and keeps a smile on his face daily. Thanks Brad!

We all received exciting news from Brad in January. In December he started a new treatment regimen and the latest MRI showed a 50% decrease in tumor size compared to only 6 weeks prior. This news is the first great news in a long time and we are all ecstatic!

Brad’s diagnosis scares us all that such a young and robust person had his life changed overnight. The kids we are supporting in this event are even younger; their whole life is ahead of them when they are diagnosed. Having fun, being “normal” and enjoying life without cancer is the focus… for even one week positively affects these kids more than you can imagine. The Sunshine Kids organization provides this break and opportunity. By participating in the 2010 Tour de Steamboat ride, attending the pre-ride benefit dinner, or both you are a part of their recovery! Donating directly to the Sunshine Kids is an even greater way to help kids struggling with this disease.

Incidentally, Brad and his wife Laura are graciously sharing their experiences and optimism with us all by maintaining a blog dedicated to his progress with this disease. Please take a moment and read about this amazing couple at: www.cusenbary.wordpress.com
In the mean time, keep riding and we hope to see you here in July!
